Mary Helena "Lena" Marinovich Newman

Born in 1920 to Mateo “Mike” and Margaret Misko Marinovich, Mary Helena was the second child, and eldest of the daughters. Their parents both from Dalmatia, Yugoslavia, she and her siblings were the first Marinovich generation to be U.S. born. As did others in her family, Lena worked in the Biloxi seafood factories peeling shrimp, picking crabs, and shucking oysters. She married Biloxi fisherman, Willard A. Newman, in St. Michael’s Church and began her family.

A skilled seamstress, Lena later created costumes for several Mardi Gras crews and volunteered her time and talent to her children’s various school functions. Her days were filled serving as Homeroom Mother and volunteering at Nativity Parish Church, Holy Angels, St. Michael’s, Sacred Heart Academy, Notre Dame and Biloxi High School.

She skillfully prepared seafood dishes and made pusharatas, a Slavonian treat taught to her by her mother. Her landscaping was the envy of many and even resulted in her Biloxi garden being featured in the Sun Herald in 2003.

We gladly honor the tireless and skilled Lena Marinovich Newman in her role as tradeswoman into our Heritage Hall of Fame.
