KENNY B

Built in 1987 in Chauvin, Louisiana, this 58-foot steel hull trawler originally bore the name Mon Amie. When purchased in 2007, by Captain Greg Baker of Jackson County, Mississippi, the boat was restored and rechristened the KENNY B, reflecting the owner’s love and admiration for his late father, Kenny Baker. Bearing the school colors for which the elder Baker served as principal for many years, the boat is always a crowd favorite with its red, white and blue paint. Especially so at Biloxi’s annual Blessing of the Fleet.

More than beautiful, the KENNY B has served the seafood and maritime industries with Captain Greg at the helm. Based out of Gautier, the vessel supplies shrimp to the community and markets and provides for the Baker family.

When the 2010 BP/Deepwater Horizon oil spill occurred, Greg knew the survival of the environment depended on dedicated effort. For three months, he captained the KENNY B in the cleanup efforts in the Gulf, dragging boom to collect oil and sheen from the waters from Florida to Louisiana.

The KENNY B is also enlisted by the “Wounded Warrior Project”. Greg’s leadership as a captain and his strong support of our military troops led him to help support and sponsor a fishing tournament in benefit of this program organized by his best friend Alan Hults and retired US Army SGM Eric Bowers. This tournament has been held every year since 2020. Each year, Greg takes the “Warriors” on a shrimping trip aboard the KENNY B and donates shrimp for the tournament meal.

For its commercial and civic contributions to the Mississippi Gulf Coast, the KENNY B is recognized and honored by the Maritime & Seafood Industry Museum’s Heritage Hall of Fame.
